Sample Thank You Letter
After your visit to the Capitol Hill, be sure to send a note to your congressional representatives
thanking them for meeting with you. The letter is a good way to maintain a relationship with the
policy maker and allows you to remind them of your visit and what you discussed. Below is a
sample letter to use in creating your own letter. If you met with a staff member, adapt the letter
to say that you appreciated meeting with the policy maker’s staff. Be sure to include your
contact information at the end of the letter.

Dear Senator/Congressman ________:
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me on Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Our visit
with you was part of the outreach and awareness efforts of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, the
organization that serves as the national voice for individuals and families affected by tuberous
sclerosis complex (TSC).
As I mentioned during our visit, tuberous sclerosis complex is a genetic disorder that attacks
many of the body's vital organs including the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, liver, eyes and skin.
The hallmark of this disorder is uncontrollable tumor growth in all of the organs, possible kidney
failure and lesions of the central nervous system that can result in seizures, behavioral disorders,
autism and mental retardation. An estimated 50,000 Americans are thought to suffer from TSC.
But because it is not widely known by the general public, nor commonly recognized by medical
professionals, the number of individuals with TSC could be far greater. For example, kidney
lesions resulting from TSC may go unnoticed until adolescence or adulthood, when serious, life-
threatening problems can occur.
We strongly urge your support of an appropriation of $10 million to accelerate the development
of new treatments and prevention strategies to combat tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). This
request builds upon the ongoing Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Research Program (TSCRP)
administered since FY2001 through the DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research
Program. An appropriation of $10 million will allow the TSCRP to fully fund a robust level of
awards for basic and applied research and the continuation of important natural history studies.
On behalf of your constituents who care about finding a cure for tuberous sclerosis complex,
thank you for taking time to hear our story about dealing with this terrible disorder and our
concerns to make sure that treatments and a cure are within our reach.
Sincerely,
YOUR NAME
