January 2013 – Fort Bragg Unified School District Band Program
Mrs. Buringrud, Band Director
II.
Middle School Advanced Band
1. Chromatic Scale: Start with the first note in your fingering chart located in the
“Essential Elements” book and work your way through every note to the last note of the
chart. (Play the enharmonic tones only once). Play each note as an eighth note with a
beat of metronome marking no slower than quarter note = 80.
Percussion students are to do this on the bells or xylophone alternating hands. All
students are to play this “up the scale” then “down” (backwards).
2. Major Scales: Prepare one octave up and down of the following Major scales:
Concert F
Concert Ab
Concert Bb
Concert Db
Concert Eb
Concert Gb
Percussion students are to do these scales on the bells or xylophone alternating hands.
3. Practice writing in counts on music you are learning. During the exam you will
be given a selection of music for you to write the correct down beats above the
measures.
Additional MS Information: Sectional rehearsals will begin for all advanced middle school band
students during the months of January and February. Students will be highly encouraged to
attend these sectionals – especially if they are planning to participate in the CMEA Band
Festival with the HS in March. These sectionals will occur Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays
after school from 3:30 – 4:30 at the HS Band room. The first two sectionals begin this week on
Wednesday with the flutes and clarinets. A schedule of sectional rehearsals will be given out by
Friday January 11
