STUDY GUIDES for MID TERM EXAMS IN BAND

High School Band
1. Chromatic Scale: Start with the first note in your fingering chart located in the
beginning of “Foundations for Superior Performance” and work your way through every
note to the last note of the chart. (Play the enharmonic tones only once). Play each note
as an eighth note with a beat of metronome marking no slower than quarter note = 80.
Percussion students are to do this on the bells or xylophone alternating hands. All
students are to play this “up the scale” then “down” (backwards).
2. Study pages 44-45 in Foundations for Superior Performance”. Be able to play each
scale listed in order of your book with a metronome marking of at least 80.
(Percussionists are to do this as well on the bells or xylophone).
3. Study page 41 in Foundations for Superior Performance”. Be able to draw your own
Circle of Fifths upon request.
4. Practice writing in counts on music you are learning. During the exam you will
be given a selection of music for you to write the correct down beats above the
measures.
5. Be able to play your part to “On a Hymn Song of Phillip Bliss” with correct notes,
rhythm, phrasing, and pitch.
Additional HS Information: Sectional rehearsals will begin for all high school band students
during the months of January and February. Students will be required to attend these sectionals.
They will occur Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays after school from 3:30 – 4:30. The first two
sectionals begin this week on Wednesday with the flutes and clarinets. Select Advanced Middle
School Band students will join these sectionals as they prepare to perform with you at the
CMEA Festival in March. A schedule of sectional rehearsals will be given out by Friday January
