Important Mathematics to Develop
The counting on in today’s lesson is counting on to find a total. Students use one known partner and count on the
second known partner to reach the total. Students may differ in their approaches to a problem like 2 + 7. Some
students are able to count on 7 from 2 to reach 9. More advanced students may count on 2 from 7, the larger
addend, to reach 9. Students use their fingers or drawings to explain their understanding of the counting on strategy.
Standards for Mathematical Practice and Content
Standards for Mathematical Practice
 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
 Model with mathematics.
 Attend to precision.
Content Standard
 1.OA.5 (Read as, “First grade, operations and algebraic thinking domain, standard 5.”) Relate counting to
addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
 1.OA.6 (Read as, “First grade, operations and algebraic thinking domain, standard 6.”) Add and subtract
within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on;
making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13
– 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12,
one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the
known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Learning Intention
We are learning that in the counting on strategy for addition we count up from one number to get a total.
Success Criteria
We will know we are successful when we can explain the counting on strategy for addition. (Tell students to check
this they will write, talk or draw an example.)
