Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

First of all, I hope you all have had a great start to the new school year. Personally, I have really

enjoyed seeing all of our Blue Jays back in school, and I have also enjoyed meeting all of our new Blue

Jays! Last year this letter did not go out until the end of the first nine weeks. However, I am certain our

current Blue Jay musicians are ready to begin playing the recorder. I can also assure you this opinion is

not just because they have been asking me about recorders since the first day of school!

A recorder is a clarinet-like instrument typically made out of wood or plastic. In my opinion, it is

the perfect “first” instrument for a student. This is due to its size and ease of play. In addition, I believe

fourth/fifth grade is the most ideal time for students to start playing the recorder. In the past at Sylvan

Elementary, parent(s)/guardian(s) were asked to purchase a recorder for their student(s) through the

school, and we will follow the same procedure this year.

This year, we will again be ordering recorders through West Music Company. Your student will

be able to purchase a Harmony Traditional Style 2-Piece Soprano Recorder for the price of $3.50. The recorder

comes with a bag, a cleaning rod, and a fingering chart. In addition, there are three color options to

choose from: red, blue, and green.

If you would like to purchase a recorder through the school, please complete the form below and

return it to school with the money in a sealed envelope or Ziploc bag with “recorder order” written on

the front on the envelope or bag no later than Friday, September 25, 2015. If you choose not to purchase a

recorder, I do have a class set of recorders for your student(s) to play. However, I highly suggest

purchasing a recorder so your child can take it home and practice. Thank you.
