To create a scrappy 12 block quilt with a 3 ½” border
you will need: (42” x 54”)
Rolling Stones
Twelve (12) 4 ½” x 4 ½” squares Fabric A for
center squares = ¼ yard
Materials Needed for one (1) 12 ½” block:
Twelve (12) 4 ½” x 18” strip Fabric B = ¾ yd.
Print Fabric A:
Background Fabric:
1 ¼ yards background fabric
One (1) 4 ½” x 4 ½” square (center of block)
Sixteen (16) 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares
2/3 yard border fabric (border will be

Batting Cut to Size
DIRECTIONS:

Sew the 2 ½” x 18” strips of print and background fabric together along the long edge. Press seam to dark fabric. (Fig 1)

Cut sewn strips into four (4) 4 ½” x 4 ½” squares. (Fig 2)

Draw a diagonal line with a pencil on the wrong side of each of the sixteen (16) 2 ½” background squares. (Fig 3)

To create a “Square in a Square” patch: Place a 2 ½” background square (right sides together) on the corner of a 4 ½” print square as
pictured. Stitch on the pencil line and trim ¼” on from the pencil line leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Open and press toward background
fabric triangle. (Fig 4)

Place another 2 ½” background square on the opposite corner of the square and repeat Step 4. Repeat the process on the other two
corners. Press all seams toward the background (corner triangles) fabric creating one “Square in a Square patch”. (Fig 5)

Create three more “Square in a Square” patches using the same instructions in Steps 4-5. (Fig 6)

Lay out your patches as pictured creating the “Rolling Stones” block. Sew the patches together in rows first using a ¼” seam. Then sew
the rows together. Press seams in center row toward outside of block and the seams in Rows 1 & 3 toward the inside of the block. (Fig 7)
