Oregon does not have a sales tax but does have property tax (taxes based
on land and homes) and income tax (taxes based on earnings from working).
Washington does not have income tax.
Some people in Oregon believe the state should adopt a sales tax. One reason for
this is that the state could raise money from people not living in the state as well
as those living in the state.
Others believe the income tax is enough. One reason they give is that a sales tax is a regressive tax,
which means it unfairly burdens people in the lower income brackets.

Compare prices for fi ve diff erent items at two stores. Th e items compared
must be identical. For example, compare a 28 ounce jar of one brand of
peanut butter to the same 28 ounce jar and brand in a diff erent store.
Or, compare a brand and style of jeans at one store with the same brand and
style in another store. Find the percent diff erence from one store to the other.
(You do NOT have to buy the items, just compare their prices.)
