As we learn how to round numbers, you may

Rounding to the Nearest Hundred
To round a number such as 4,175 to the nearest hundred,
hundreds place

greater than 5
• If this digit is less than 5, do not change
the digit in the rounding place.
• If it is greater than or equal to 5, increase
the digit in the rounding place by 1.
• Then change all of the digits to the right
of the rounding place to zeros.
Since the digit to the right of the hundreds place is 7 and 7 is
greater than 5, 4,175 rounded to the nearest hundred is 4,200.
Knowing about place value of greater numbers and money will help
students solve problems using these kinds of numbers.
