Letter to Family
Dear Family,
I would like you to do something with your child that involves subtraction. For
example, you might have three orange slices. Your child eats one orange slice,
so there are two orange slices left. Then I would like you to help your child draw
a picture and write a number sentence to show what happened. For example,
your child could draw a picture of 3 orange slices, cross 1 slice out, and write
the number sentence 3 – 1 = 2. Please start with no more than ten objects
when you are doing this activity.
In class we will organize the subtraction number sentences into fact families
and write the addition sentences to go with each fact family. In the above exam-
ple, 3 – 2 = 1 is the related fact for 3 – 1 = 2. The addition sentences that are
part of this fact family are 2 + 1 = 3 and 1 + 2 = 3.
