A Family Newsletter
Greetings, Family!
Weather is all around us, and it changes from day to day — even hour to
hour. In our next unit, “Weather and Water,” our science class will study
the causes of weather and how weather is measured, recorded, and
predicted. We will learn to use weather instruments and record local
weather data on a weather chart. We will learn how to read a weather
map to forecast weather. And along the way, we will consider ways to
conserve and protect Earth’s dwindling supply of fresh, drinkable water.
You can make science come alive for your child in and around your
home. Each morning, watch or read the weather report. Later, discuss how
accurate the day’s forecast was. Together, look for dew drops on spider
webs or frost on windowpanes. Take notice of the size, shape, and color
of the clouds that pass overhead each day. Observe how wind affects
outdoor objects, and share any experiences you’ve had with severe storms.
For the hands-on activities in this module, we are collecting the
items listed below. Can you donate any of these items? If so, we need
to receive your donated materials by
.
2-liter plastic bottles
different types of
magazines (to be cut up)
weather maps
In addition, each pair of students will need a ceramic coffee
mug and a clear plastic container or bowl. The mug must fit in
and be at least 5 cm (about 2 in.) shorter than the container. These mate-
rials will be needed before
. They will be brought back
home the day of the activity.
Finally, do you or other family members have any special experience
with this topic? Would you be able to help with activities? If so, please
fill out the form and have your student return it to class.
Thank you very much for your help!
