A Family Newsletter
Greetings, Family!
In our next unit, Rocks, Weathering, and Erosion, our science class
will be studying how minerals and rocks form and how they change.
Students will observe mineral and rock samples, and will learn how to
perform tests to identify minerals. They will learn the three basic types
of rocks, make and observe models of rocks and Earth processes, and
use timers and magnifiers to collect data.
You can make science come alive for your child in and around your
home. Encourage your child to collect rock samples. You can find
neighborhood locations where erosion is taking place, and help your
child do homework and research. You might also want to visit a rock
shop, jewelry shop, or natural history museum to look at interesting
stones and gems.
Most of the materials for hands-on activities in this unit have been
provided. But a special section involves students eating their way
through “Earth!” We could use your help in preparing food items in
advance (following specific instructions), in providing ingredients for
student use, as well as your help in class. If you can help in any way,
please complete and return the form at the bottom of the page. You
will be contacted with specific information.
Thank you very much for your help!
