A Family Newsletter
Greetings, Family!
In science class, we are beginning a unit called Earth. During this unit,
students will learn about where water comes from and where it goes.
They will make a “sky window” and use it to observe the sky. They will
go on a landform walk, and learn how erosion changes landforms. The
students will also learn about some of Earth’s natural resources, and
discuss the importance of conserving and recycling resources.
You can make science interesting and real for your child by taking
the time to notice the natural world around you. After a rainstorm,
draw a chalk outline of a puddle and watch it shrink over time. Observe
the color of the sky and the type of clouds you see before, during, and
after a storm. Whenever you travel with your child, point out landforms
you see, such as mountains, hills, lakes, or plains. And talk about the
way your family helps conserve Earth’s precious resources by recycling.
At two points during this unit, your child will be given homework
assignments. The first involves watching a sunset and noting the colors
in the sky. Your child will be asked to draw the sunset or report his
or her observations back to the class. The second assignment involves
conserving resources. Your child will bring home a homework sheet
titled Ways to Save Water. Your family will be asked to discuss how
water is used in the home and list ways in which the family could
conserve more water.
Finally, we can always use your help in the classroom. Do you or
other family members have a particular interest in or special experi-
ence with science? Would you be able to help with activities? If so,
please fill out the form below and have your child return it to class.
Thank you very much for your help!
