CHAPTER OUTLINES/WORKSHEETS
CHAPTER 3
ALKANES AND CYCLOALKANES
NOTES
This chapter is mostly nomenclature — a myriad of new names and rules. We will not put much
emphasis on nomenclature as a separate topic. However, you should be familiar with the
common hydrocarbons up to C8. Also, you need not memorize Table 3.1! You should,
however, be able to describe the bonding and properties of the common functional groups.
I. FUNCTIONAL GROUPS
"The chemistry of every organic molecule, regardless of size and complexity, is determined by
the functional groups it contains." McMurry
You should be familiar with all of the functional groups which are presented in class, and be able
to identify them in a given molecule.
1. Functional groups with Carbon-Carbon bonds
a. Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, arenes
2. Functional Groups with Carbon-(Electronegative Atom) Bonds
a. Single bonds — alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines, thiols
b. Double bonds — oxygen (carbonyls)
II. ALKANES AND ALKANE ISOMERS
1. Alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons, aliphatic compounds, normal and branched-chain
alkanes)
2. Constitutional isomers (carbon skeleton, functional group, functional group position)
3. Normal alkane nomenclature
4. Alkyl groups (primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary carbons)
5. Naming alkanes — general IUPAC rules. [Prefix — parent — suffix]
a. Unambiguous system of nomenclature
