COATS OF ARMS
ACTIVITY SHEET
How would you describe your class, school or town to a stranger? Things like
important landmarks, inventions, stories and where people worked all play an
important part in how people think and feel about a place: its local identity. Some
towns and villages even feature the canal and related industries on their burgh seal or
coat of arms.
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your
strength.”
George RR Martin, ‘A Game of Thrones’
This activity combines social history and personal history. It is not only an exercise in visual arts
and design, but also a chance for young people to examine their local history or personal story and
developing values and beliefs. In exploring, expressing and communicating these ideas, students
can strengthen their self-confidence, better understand each other, and learn to respect
themselves and their classmates. Download and print one Coat of Arms Examples sheet and one
Coat of Arms Template per student.
Activity instructions
1. As a class, look at the examples of coats of arms on the worksheet. Discuss what the
symbols and shapes might mean. Why do you think these things were important to the
people who lived there?
2. Participants should think about their own school or town, or themselves as individuals, and
write a list of things that might represent them.
3. Use these ideas to design your own coat of arms. Each participant should be given a Coat
of Arms Template. Participants should think about which of the things on their list are
most important and how they might represent them on their Coat of Arms.
4. Decorate and colour your coat of arms.
