We   e ncourage   t he   p arent/caregiver   t o   a ccompany   t he   c hild   f or   t he   e xam.   T his   a llows   f or   s everal   b enefits:  
1. We   a re   e xcited   a bout   t aking   c are   o f   k ids   a nd   w ant   t o   s hare   t hat   e nthusiasm   w ith   y ou.  
2. We   w ant   t o   i nvolve   y ou   w ith   w hat   w e   f ind,   r ather   t han   h ave   y ou   t ake   o ur   w ork   f or   i t.  
3. A   l ot   o f   e ducation   i s   p rovided   a t   t he   e xam.   I f   y ou   a re   n ot   p resent,   m uch   o f   t he   e ducation   g ets   m issed.  
4. With   t he   k nowledge   p arents   r eceive   f rom   b eing   p resent   f or   t he   e xam,   p arents   c an   t ake   m ore   c ontrol   o f   t heir   c hild’s  
oral   h ealth   a t   h ome.  
 
Infants   a nd   T oddlers:   u ntil   t wo   o r   t hree   y ears   o ld,   t he   e xam   i s   u sually   d one   w ith   t he   c hild   o n   t he   p arent’s   l ap.   I t   i s   n ormal   t o   b e  
shy   a nd   s ometimes   t o   c ry   e ven   f or   s imple   e xaminations.   T his   i s   n ormal   b ehavior   a nd   i n   n o   w ay   d oes   i t   u pset   u s,   a nd   y ou  
should   n ot   b e   e mbarrassed   n or   s hould   y ou   f eel   o bligated   t o   q uiet   t he   c hild   ( if   t hey   a re   c rying,   t heir   m outh   i s   o pen).   W e   a re   a  
pediatric   p ractice   a nd   w e   e xpect   s ome   n oise   f rom   t he   y oung   c hildren,   a nd   h ope   t hat   y ou   w ill   h ave   p atience   w hen   t here   a re  
other   c hildren   s till   g etting   c omfortable   w ith   d ental   v isits.

child-­‐friendly   w ay.   T hen,   w hen   a ppropriate,   w e   s how   t hem   w hat   w e   a re   g oing   t o   d o.   L astly,   w e   m ove   s lowly   i n   b aby   s teps  
when   w e   d o   a ny   p rocedure.   T his   p revents   a ny   b ig   s urprises   t hat   m ay   f righten   t he   c hild.   U sing   t his   a pproach   h elps   c hildren   b e  
more   c omfortable   a nd   d evelops   t rust   b etween   t he   s taff   a nd   y our   c hild.
