Introduction
If you have completed the Dental Office Receptionist project, you may remember that Ginger,
Dr. Barnaby’s receptionist, performs tasks from multiple job descriptions, including those that
a dental assistant would perform in other dental offices. When you read the U.S. Department
of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics information related to dental assistants, you’ll discover that
these individuals perform a wide variety of duties on the dental care team. Look for more
information at fter Kelly’s initial visit, Dr. Barnaby
dictated the following information for Ginger to chart as quickly as possible to include in
a fax to Dr. White’s office.
Teeth numbers 2 though 15 are present, as are numbers 17 through 31. She has unerupted
wisdom teeth numbers 1, 16, 17 and 32 evidenced on the dental X-rays. There are old dental
amalgam restorations on the top surfaces of teeth numbers 3, 5, 13, 15 and 31. Probing depths
need to be recorded: ll are measured at 2 millimeters except as follows: # 8 mesial measures
5 mm, # 9 mesial measures 7 mm, distal of # 9 measures 9mm, #10 mesial measures 9 mm
and distal measures 9 mm. Numbers 11 and 12 both have probing depths of 8 mm. Number 13
measures 2 mm as do the remainder. Chart those for us please as soon as possible to include
with the fax to Dr. White’s office as soon as you finish. Thanks. lso, we will need to make
impressions of Kelly’s upper and lower teeth just in case. I see that we have all 20 dental X-rays
plus a panoramic X-ray. You will need to have Kelly’s mother take a copy of those to Dr. White’s
office. I think that is all for now.
The Task
lthough you can tell that time is of the essence for Ginger, functioning as the dental assistant
in Dr. Barnaby’s office, you need to develop or refresh your memory with some background
knowledge before you proceed.
