Winterizing Your Log Home
Fall Maintenance
The leaves have fallen and snowflakes are on their way! But that’s okay with you,
because there’s nothing cozier than a log home in the winter. But how can you keep
your home safe and warm during these cold, cold months? Here are a few tips to help.
Grab your coat and gloves. You’re going outside to inspect your home for several things.
1. Log surfaces: Look at the stain on all surfaces. Depending on weather conditions
in your area and other aspects unique to your location, you may find that one or
more sides are weathering differently than others. Getting fresh stain and
protection on the logs before the cold weather sets in will protect your home
against the harshest elements. The cool, dry weather that occurs in the fall is the
perfect time to refinish your home—or the sections that need care.
2. Cracked or missing chinking or caulking: If you can feel the wind when you’re
INSIDE your home, that’s a problem. If your log home has chinking, it’s a good
idea to assess how it’s holding up before the weather makes it impossible to fix
any problems. Because caulking and chinking are water-based products, they
need to be applied when the temperature is above 50°F. Fall is a good time to
seal gaps or cracks in your log home.
PermaChink® has a great method for assessing if you have any air leaks
caused by gaps in your exterior. Check it out here:

3. Windows and doors: Weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors
is critical both in the summer (when air conditioning is running) and in the
winter. Take time to look at every window and door. Some energy services, like
your local electric or gas company, will even do an assessment for you to show
you where heat is leaking out or cold air is coming in. Visual inspections are the
first line of defense, however.
Use the checklist on the following page to do your fall inspection. If you need immediate
service, please give us a call right away so we can schedule your work this year. If you
know you’ll need some restoration work done next year, call us now, too. We can put
you on our spring calendar so you can enjoy a carefree summer in your log home.
