CPSC 570: Introduction to Research
Technical Paper Summary/Critique Form
1. Overview of Issue/Problem/Question of interest
In approximately one to three sentences, restate the issue or problem that the authors are trying to
solve. Don’t evaluate the relevance of the problem here, just restate the problem or issue being
addressed.
2. Proposed Solution
In approximately one to three sentences, restate the proposed solution to the problem/issue. What is
the key insight that makes this approach feasible?
3. Evaluation
How do the authors evaluate their idea/approach? Did they analyze data collected from
experimentation or simulation? Did they implement their idea or conduct theoretical analysis? What
sort of statistical analysis did they perform (if any)? What metrics did they use to evaluate how well they
met their goals? What was their overall conclusion from this evaluation/analysis?
4. Open Issues/Questions
After reading the paper, answer the following questions:
What limitations do the authors mention about their approach?
What limitations do you see with this approach?
Do you see any ways in which this work could be extended (in new ways or new areas)?
Write a question that addresses how well one truly understands the approach, methodology,
problem/issue, or evaluation/analysis of this paper or research .
5. Overall Quality
How well did the authors evaluate their work?
Give your assessment of the overall quality of the research (how relevant is it? Is it technically sound?).
How well written is the paper (How well organized? Was it easy to follow & understand? Did the authors
use jargon, or did they use comprehendible language?)?
