Form Information Sheet
Every piece in music has a structure. If we look at a pop song, the structure might
be:
verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus
Each section (the verse, chorus and bridge) are different and contrasting. The
pattern in which they repeat gives their structure.
In music, we call this structure the FORM
We can condense the structure above into a pattern of letters by assigning each
section a letter.
Let’s call the verse the A section, the chorus the B section and the Bridge the C
section
This will give us the form A B A B C B B
In music, there are many other forms besides this one (A B A B C B B). The main
form we will be looking at is called rondo form. The main feature of rondo form is
a repeating theme (like a chorus). This theme usually repeats three times and is
separated by two contrasting passages, giving the structure:
A B A C A
Examples of other forms include:
Strophic - A A A etc.
Binary - A B
Ternary - A B A
Rondo - A B A C A
Sonata Rondo - A B A C A B A
Song Form - A B A B C B B
Through Composed - A B C D E etc.
